suspicious Odors
Properly installed and maintained fireplaces shouldn’t produce odor. Direct vent fireplaces could have building materials without adequate clearances. Woodburning fireplaces that have been converted to gas could point to inadequate fresh air and the inability to properly vent. Vent-free appliances could be a number of different things. Regardless of which style of fireplace you have, if you are experiencing odors it is better to ask why.
discolored Glass
Fossil fuels create sulfur during combustion. When sulfur mixes with oxygen and moisture it will create sulfuric acid. A white film containing this can permanently etch the glass if not cleaned regularly. A black sooty film can indicate incomplete combustion inside the fireplace. This can be attributed to clogged burners or orifices or misplaced logs.
Slow/No ignition cutting off
A fireplace should ignite when you flip the switch or use the remote and continue to operate until you turn it off. If your fireplace is experiencing slow ignition or no ignition, this could be a safety hazard. This could be especially dangerous in propane fireplace. Propane is heavier than air so it stays low and will not dissipate like natural gas. If your fireplace turns itself off it could be a sign of a number of different things.
no service history
A fireplace should provide years of ambience and heat for you and your family. You should always want to know the history on it. If there is no service record, you should always opt for an inspection to make sure that it is operating correctly and safely.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, please discontinue use of appliance and call a qualified service technician to inspect your unit. Your family’s safety is of the utmost importance.
